Would you cancel your subscription if Ensidia got perma-banned?

So, Ensidia got suspended for 72 hours for exploiting a bug in the Lich King encounter.  That probably means that another guild will get the world first kill on the Lich King and maybe on the hard mode content as well.  Ensidia isn’t happy about it and is not happy with Blizzard either.  One particular guild member decided to vent his frustration on his blog:

I just got banned, and I liked it.

I understand his frustration both with the ban and with the direction the game has gone in general.  I can’t say I agree with his frustration, but I understand where he’s coming from.  However, there’s one comment he made that I’d just like to LOL at a little:

“I doubt we’ll ever get a perm-ban, as the loss of PR from banning topguilds is going to hurt their subscription numbers…”

We’ve heard this type of comment from various top guilds before.  I’m not sure about you, but I think Ensidia puts a little too much credit in how many people care about them.  I did a simple survey on my server and I couldn’t find a single person who would cancel their subscription if Ensidia got perma-banned.  If there are non-Ensidia people who would quit WOW over an Ensidia ban, I’m sure the numbers would not be meaningful to a company who has over 11 million subscribers.

Anyways, I thought I’d open my survey up to you guys.  Is there anyone here who would actually cancel your WOW subscription if Ensidia got perma-banned?  Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

    And who is Ensidia again?

Who cares? Fuck them… And no… I’d continue playing… I’m not in their guild so what do I care? It’s a game… There will even come a day when WoW is replaced and their guild is deader than Michael Jackson… Who cares?

  3. I might, but not specifically for Ensidia. If I did, it would be for the principle of the thing, not because it was Ensidia over say, EJ.

  4. um…who is Ensidia? never heard of ‘em

I am more interested in knowing what the loop hole was and Why Blizz would ban then for exploiting it? Isn’t that the job of the Software testers to make sure that these sorts of things get caught before release??

Seems similar to Groove Gate going on right now with the PGA…not the player’s fault that it was a bad build (or rule as in the PGA case)

    Thanks

  5. Oh come on, that’s just mean. We all had moments when we said things we would regret as soon as we calm down.

  6. Who gives a damn shit about them??? Who??? Certainly not 10.999.900 people…

  7. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA….

    *gasp*

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I’m sorry, but no. My like or dislike of a game is not going to be based on the punishments (rightfully or wrongfully, depending on who you talk to) or rewards of people engaging in content that I likely won’t see until Cataclysm comes out. (VERY casual here - most of my recent raids were pre-BC and BC content just for the achievements.)

And frankly any time someone makes a statement like “We’re so important banning us would seriously hurt you!” I find them to be amazingly pretentious. Sure, they may have said it in a moment of weakness and/or rage, but that’s how it comes off nonetheless.

  8. first off, whos that guild???

its abit over the top for blizzard to give a 72hr ban when they over looked a very easy to spot bug in the fight and no one picked it up on the PTR. Also its not like they sort to find a bug/loop hole in the fight to make it easier like that guild did in the Yogg-Saron fight in uld.

So no, i wouldn’t stop playing wow just b.c some peeps who i don’t know got banned for a mistake that blizzard should have picked up.

  9. I’ve never heard of them … so no

  10. Would I quit if the guild that transfered to my realm to get a first kill achievement on Algalon becuase the couldn’t do it on their own was perma banned?
Probably not. Ensidia certianlly never improved my gameplay.

  11. I’m with the rest……never heard of these guys. Hell, I wouldn’t cancel even if my own guild got perma-banned.

  12. No king rules forever, enshitia

  13. Who are these guys and why should I care about them again?

  14. I find the level of hostility towards Ensidia a little odd to be honest. Like seriously, people calling them Enshitia? It’s not exactly like they turn up at peoples houses and rape puppies or something. They’re a bunch of people who have made WoW overly important to themselves - not the devil.

Would I quit because they were permabanned? No, that’d be pretty absurd.

Will people being banned for bugging encounters be something I remember when the time comes to choose my sub between SW:ToR and WoW? Probably. I’ve already been trying other MMOs since WotLK lost its charm due to buggy encounters and lazy gear handouts.

  15. I know who they are, follow their website and forums and no I would not. Can they honestly say that they did not think the saronite bombs were an exploit…

Eat the ban and get over it.

  16. No.

  17. Good for top guilds being good at WoW. If bad things happen, too bad for them. They need to get over themselves. It’s a video game, not even their moms care if they get banned.

I read Muqq’s blog post where he ranted about this and then started going through the comments to the post and the self absorbedness of some people astonishes me. WoW has 11 MILLION players. Many of which are completely casual, few of which are “hardcore”. The casual players have never heard of Ensidia…the hardcore players (IMO) should view this ban as an excellent opportunity for their guild to make a run at the world first. I don’t understand what world he’s living in where Blizzard needs to be scared that their 11 million customer base will start to dwindle away because they ban one guild. Even if all of your “hardcore” guilds (defining hardcore for the purpose of this discussion as guilds that could possibly be in the running for world or server firsts) were to up an quit as one I can’t imagine we’re talking about more than one or two percent of their customer base. Blizzard has made it clear (through their actions) that they are focused on their much larger casual customer base. Right or wrong players like Muqq and his guildmates in Ensidia just aren’t that vital to them.

  19. LOL never heard of them. I’m not a hardcore player and why would I quit because someone else got banned?

  20. Couldn’t care less about Ensidia. They were obviously aware of the fact that they are abusing (as they usually run alt runs before they go in with mains) and they absolutely deserved the ban.

  21. I don’t care about Ensidia, but I don’t think they should’ve got the 72 hour ban. If Blizz didn’t do their homework on PTR and testing, why should players be punished for Blizz not catching the exploit? I think he makes valid points about Blizz not fully vetting the encounters. My guess is that Blizz figures 98% of subscribers will not see the LK for at least two years, so doesn’t need as much emphasis. Instead I’d wish they would make the encounter foolproof and the work of art it is supposed to be for those that spend the time and effort to get there.

  22. What i think is funny is when Exodus did this almost exact thing on yogg+0 and got 72hr ban, and Ensidia said they deserved it for exploiting, but yet when Ensidia gets a taste of the same medicine its /cancel subscription time.

  23. Ensidia is generally considered as the top guild in the world. If you don’t know that, it’s like playing basketball everyday and not knowing who Michael Jordan is. It doesn’t have any bearing on how good or bad of a player you are, but it really limits your references and knowledge. Because if you don’t know who number one is, chances are you have no idea who number 2-10 and lower are (and they’re all likely better than you and your guild), so who are you learning from?

As for the ban, Ensidia “deserved” the ban on a technical standpoint the way a man who’s passed out drunk in his car parked in the driveway with the keys in the passenger seat “deserves” a DUI charge. But on a normal thinking level, no. I’m not going to write a wall of text and break down everything about the encounter, but I read Muqq’s post (http://www.ensidia.com/muqq/blog/4078/) and I agreed with every thing he said. The game isn’t WoW anymore, and Blizzard really doesn’t care too much about high-end players the way it used to. After all, whether you’re raiding 10 hours a day or logging on once a week, it’s still $15/month to them.

Still, this Ensidia ban is no reason for anyone else to quit the game. If you enjoy the game for what it is right now, play on. Play for another 10 years, I say. Have a lifetime subscription. Videogames of all genres are meant for one purpose: Fun. The majority of the 12 million subscribers are having fun with World of Warcraft right now. The only difference is, the veterans and hardcore players aren’t anymore and they’re leaving. It’s not a “good” or “bad” thing for the game; it’s just an exercise of opinion.

    • “I have fun playing still. I will keep playing.”
    • “I am no longer enjoying this game. I will stop playing.”

It’s that simple. Personally, I’m not having much fun anymore, and every day more reasons pile up as to why WotLK will be my last expansion in World of Warcraft after more than five long years. I’ll likely write about them in a future post, but I just wanted to stop by here and say: Don’t let anyone else dictate why you play. Stay for your own reasons and leave for the same.

  24. Who?

No, I’m kidding, I know who they are. They’re those people who get mentioned sometimes in WoW Insider post titles for doing stuff.

I don’t actually read the posts. But I see the titles.

A top raiding guild getting banned is part of the ebb and flow of the game. It was bound to happen to somebody, and if Ensidia didn’t learn anything from the Martin Fury incident…. They should know that Blizz doesn’t care who you are or if you intended to exploit a bug. If you exploit, you get in trouble. I’m sure they’ve been first so often because they DO push the envelope, which would only make this situation more inevitable.

Honestly, I like that Blizzard keeps the punishment the same no matter who’s breaking the rules. Makes the world (of Warcraft) seem more fair to us little folk.

Whether or not players agree with the rules in the first place is a discussion in itself, but it’s also moot to whether or not someone should be punished for breaking what rules are in place.

  25. No they new it could happen when they did so they got what they ask for i not going to stop playing the game cause hey where fucking retards

  26. I don’t think I’d quite because of them, but, blizzard policy has often lead me to wonder if I’m wise in donating my 15$/month to them. If it makes me think that I could possibly be playing the game in a normal way, and suddenly be banned, then I don’t feel I’m making a secure investment and that it’s not worth paying for.

Couldn’t care less about Ensidia themselves, but, Blizzard’s behavior and actions are a bit disconcerting.
