Razorscale Strat/Guide - Ulduar

Razorscale is the first real boss you should attempt in Ulduar.  If you tried Razorscale last week and failed, I encourage you to go back in and try again this week.  He received a few different minor nerfs that help a lot.  He was much easier to down this week compared to last week.  Maybe we were better prepared or more experienced, but either way, try him again and see if you’ll do better this week.

Group Composition

Razorscale is actually much easier on 10-man if you have three tanks.  You’ll want your third tank to watch the middle for Sentinels that spawn and pick them up quickly.  We had a fury warrior tank the middle with his tanking gear on and he switched to a 2-hander when he wasn’t tanking.  You can also do it with 2 tanks, but one of them has to keep a close eye on the Sentinels and pick them up quickly and the healers need to be ready with heals on him.  Two tanks is better sometimes because the Sentinels spawn at random and you may go awhile (even the entire fight) without seeing one.  Keep your melee off the Sentinels if they appear and have your range focus on bringing them down.  Kill the Watchers first if a Sentinel isn’t up and make sure to interrupt their Chain Lightning casts.  The difficulty of this fight can change a lot depending on how many Sentinels you get.

You should be able to do Razorscale 10-man with two healers, but a third doesn’t hurt.  He does have an enrage timer though, so make sure you have enough dps.  That might be hard if you have 3 tanks and 3 healers.

Healing the Raid

Razorscale

Don’t listen to those Holy Paladins that tell you to exclusively spam Holy Light on every fight, especially in a 10-man raid.  I’ve found very few fights, even in Heroic Naxx and Ulduar, that require straight Holy Light spam, and Razorscale is no exception.  Intelligent use of all three of your heals is almost always the best strategy.  I usually find for almost every encounter in the game, including this one, that I use about 2 - 3 Flash of Lights for every Holy Light, interspersed with a generous use of Holy Shock, and I’m able to keep up both the raid and the tanks with no problem for an entire encounter, especially when using Divine Plea on every cooldown.  I can raid heal while keeping the tank up almost exclusively with Beacon of Light.  If you find your tank dying a lot, feel free to go back to Holy Light spam.  I do use Spell Power and Crit gems instead of Intellect gems, so that helps me with this strategy.  If you’re doing 25-mans and super-hard content, you probably do need more specialized roles where Holy Light spam is required.  But for most 10-mans, its better to have a well-balanced approach to healing and quick twitch finger to take care of burst damage.

During Phase one of Razorscale, I found I actually had to use Holy Light less than usual.  Holy Shock, Flash of Light, and Beacon of Light did a great job at keeping everyone topped off and they allow a lot more movement and quicker heals.  The only exception is when a Sentinel spawned and damage started getting more intense.  You’ll want to throw some more Holy Lights around then, especially on the tanks.

Positioning

Razorscale is a movement fight, so you’ll want to make sure you’re always in range of the people who need your heals.  You’ll want to keep most of your people, especially healers and ranged, in the general middle area so they can all help out wherever needs helping the most.  Don’t feel like you need to keep moving the entire time.  The more you stand still, the easier healing will be.  Watch for the fireballs coming down on you and then move quickly out of the blue fire and you’ll be good.  Fire Resistance aura helps out in this fight to minimize the damage from all the fireballs coming down.

Phase 2

Phase 2 can actually be pretty healing intensive, especially as your melee dps and others end up standing in the fire or otherwise taking damage they shouldn’t.  You will want to use Holy Light more in Phase 2, compared to Phase 1.  Make sure to watch out for when the tanks switch so you can immediately start spamming heals on the new tank.  You’ll want to stand in the center of the circle, but be ready to move if the tank starts pulling the boss towards you, so you don’t get caught in his breath attack.  Always make sure you’re behind or beside the boss and not in front of him.  Keep your mana up with potions and Divine Plea and before you know it, you’ll have another kill notch on your bedpost.

  1. you’re definitely right that on this fight during p1 you want to shy away from HLs. the dmg on the raid will be anywhere from 4-7k and unless they get hit twice in a row a simple FoL will suffice. also, you start spamming HLs and they won’t land before someone else heals them to full. basically spam FoL and keep the tank beaconed. p2 you should have a full mana bar and be able to pop illumination/aw and spam HL till the boss drops without even worrying about mana. if you have mana, use it imo.

we also do this fight with 1 drood tank, 1 holy pally and 1 holy priest. honestly though this could probably be single-healed without any problem.

  2. now im a FoL spamming pally with an occasional HL and using my HS at all time and im always above 70% mana like i have said in other post i have heal x002 decon solo with FoL spamming and HS once or twice …
if you go for the SP crit gear road u shud b fine spamming FoL i have gone with int & crit with a little haste and i can soon spam HL constant 24 times in a row without a crit
