Intro to Holy Paladin Gear

Step 1 - Get Some Gear!

The first thing you’ll want to do before you even spec into Holy is to get some healing gear.  As a new Holy Paladin, you’re going to be looking for gear that is very different from the gear you probably already have as prot or ret.  While Protection and Retribution paladins both use gear with strength and attack power, those stats are mostly useless for Holy Paladins.

That being said, choosing gear as a Holy Paladin is fairly simple.  Holy Paladins are the only spec in the game that use plate gear with spellpower.  You can also wear mail, leather, and cloth spellpower gear.  Once you get to heroics and start raiding, most mobs will kill you within 1 or 2 melee hits whether you wear plate or not, so choosing a non-plate item is perfectly acceptable.  Just make sure not to roll on a non-plate item if another person in your group can use it.  Priority should go to the class of the appropriate armor type, since they don’t have access to plate gear like you do.  Most paladins still choose plate gear over other types because of the benefits it gives you while soloing, and for asthetic and roleplaying appeal.

Step 2 - Make sure its the right gear

In a future post, I’ll go over each of the stats you’ll be looking for in more detail.  For now, look for gear with the following stats:

All the other stats a piece of gear can have are mostly useless for a Holy Paladin.  If a piece of gear has Spirit, Hit Rating, Strength, Attack Power, Agility, Defense Rating, etc, you will almost always want to pass unless the item level on the gear is much higher than your current item.

Step 3 - Check your Item Levels

You can see the Item Level is 159.

You can see the Item Level is 159.

Every piece of gear is assigned an item level by Blizzard.  Blizzard uses these levels to budget the stats that go on each piece of gear.  Each stat has a certain point value that, when added together, match the item’s level.  The formula isn’t exact.  For example, a piece of gear with a balance of many stats will have higher values overall than a piece of gear that stacks just one or two stats.

As you first level up and gear up, you’ll want to focus primarily on your gear’s item levels.  In most cases, if a piece of gear doesn’t have any stats you don’t want, and is a higher item level than what you’re using, it will be an upgrade.  When  you’re first gearing up, most gear you get will not have the same item level, so it makes choosing gear easy.  If you’re using this strategy, make sure you choose gear that only has stats that are useful (the ones listed above).  Stats you can’t use still take up budget points on an item.  For example, an item level 200 piece of gear that stacks strength will not be as useful to you as an item level 187 gear that stacks spellpower, even if the item level is higher.

One problem is that gear item levels are not shown in-game at all by default.  However, you can easily check a piece of gear’s item level by browsing to http://www.thottbot.com (or a similiar site) and entering the item’s name.  While leveling up, I usually keep a thottbot window or two open in the background at all times so I can quickly alt-tab out and compare an item’s level against my own.  If you want to be able to see item levels quickly in-game, you can install an Add-on such as RatingBuster.  It will show you an item’s level when you hover over the item as well as other useful info about the item’s stats.

At some point, you’re going to run into two items which have all the right stats and have the same or similiar item levels.  In that case, you’re going to want to look at the specific stats and figure out which ones are more appropriate for you.  This usually doesn’t happen much until you’re running heroics or raiding a lot.  When you get to that point, check out the debate between Spell Power and Intellect.  In the meantime, start getting your spellpower gear!

  1. Look forward to learning from your guide. Have Played a Hunter to Malygos and my Pally is a lvl 71 ret. that I am wanting to go Holy with.
Hurry with the beginning healers guide please :)

  2. What I am really wanting to see is which talents/spells are used, which are actually worthless, ect.
I have 0 healing experience. Thanks again for all the info. thus far, very helpfull.

  3. I’ve got which talents/spells you should use scattered throughout each post right now. I’ll definitely take some time to make some dedicated posts on that topic though. Right now I’m focusing a lot on the Holy Paladin UI, because I really think it has a much bigger affect on your ability to heal than squeaking out a few extra points from your gear and talents. It doesn’t matter how good your gear/spec is if you are a slow/bad healer.

  4. Thx, keep up the good work :)

  5. My holy pally right now (Deathbloomin - Blade’s Edge) is using Xperl I think that worsk wonders from healing in raids. Just a suggestion.

And dont listen to people that say HealBot increases your healing efficiency. In my opinion it decreases it if you have Xperl. But some people might prefer it. So check it out before you decide.

And Admin, check out my gear and critic it. :DD

    (Constructive Critism please) 29.**% Crit

  6. I haven’t actually used Xperl. I might add that as an option at the top of my Healbot post, along with Grid + Clique.

    Your gear looks great! =-)

Some suggestions if you’re having any mana problems:

Replace your meta gem with the Insightful Earthstorm Diamond (its better)
Socket your gloves/wrist with Royal Twilight Opal so you can do that
Use the Libram of Renewal (its better too)
Get Icewalker enchant for your boots
Use a PvE Enchant for your shoulders
    Socket/Enchant your chest.
Put 63 Spell Power enchant on your weapon
Get exalted with Sons of Hodir
    Level up your Enchanting

Other than that, everything looks great! =-D

  7. Hi! First, thanks for your guides, they are very useful and nice to read.

I’m actually raiding in ulduar, both in 25 and 10 men with my guild,

and i feel torn between Haste and crit, as many others i guess.

My itemisation is full off-set, as my guildies are token focused :o

    My stats unbuff are:

    SP: 2195
    Crit: 39.75% (holy)
    Haste: 341
    Regen: 241

Do you think I should look for some more haste? like 600?
Which stat should I reduce in order to increase haste, if I have to do it?

Thanks in advance for your attention, and sorry for my english, it’s been a while :o
    it seems to me

  8. Hi Nywale. I really think you’re looking pretty good on haste, unless you’re really having trouble getting your heals off in time. If you’re using Holy Light primarily on the tank and the tank isn’t dying, then you don’t need more haste. Crit will help you a lot more with mana regeneration and offer about the same heal throughput. If you’re raid healing, then I encourage you to look into using Holy Shock and Flash of Light more, in which case, crit is also a better option. Check out my discussion about haste vs. crit below:

  9. Hi^^

    Thanks for your quick answer.

I did check your guide before posting ofc, but, when i look around me, every single holypal plays with 600+ haste.

Not that i just want to follow everybody like a sheep, but i was wondering if there was a precise number to reach.

Plus in your guide, you wrote that it could be cool to be able to cast your flash in 1 sec, for raid healing i guess. And this is far from my case, as mine také 1.3 sec when i use judgment.

Anyway, thank you very much for your time, you confirmed my feeling of being ok with haste.

    Have a nice day^^

  10. damn seems like the armory link i provided in my nickname’s link shows me 0/0/0.

    I’m actually 51/2/18

  11. You might want a little more haste, especially if you don’t have a shaman in your group. I have two trinkets that can proc an extra 505 haste and they do so frequently. I also always have a shaman, so I don’t stack my base haste as much. Still, 400 - 500 haste is a good amount. If you can shed some of your Mp5 and stamina for better stats, that will help. I think your Mp5 is a little high.

  12. Thank you very much for your input, and your time :)

I’ll work on it and i’ll get back here ;)

  13. Hello,

    these are my current stats:
    2226 spellpower
    674 haste
    34,91% holy crit
    63 mp5 while casting
    23194 mana

i am debating with the other healadins in the guild if it is worth losing the 4set bonus from T7,5

i already offered to first try the 8,5 4setbonus (chest, leg, hands and shoulders) because i think the one with the biggest mana pool can benefit the most :)

    what do you think? :)

    ps http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Auchindoun&n=Kurotshuchi

  14. You could go for the 2 set bonus of each and actually have a pretty nice gear set with no Mp5 and bonuses that complement each other.

I’ll probably go for the 4 piece bonus eventually, but I’m not in a rush to get it. I’m sure I’ll keep T7 around for awhile. Still, a little Mp5 won’t kill you, the stats aren’t bad, and the 4 piece bonus is fine, especially if you’re not running out of mana.

  15. Hej

Been reading all your guides and love them, but I cant find anything on metagems.

I have been using Ember Skyflare Diamond (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=41333#comments) so far as the ekstra spell power and int was really nice gearing up at 80.
Now I got full tier 7 and badge gear and Im thinking of switching to Revitalizing Skyflare Diamond (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=41376) for the ekstra crit healing.
But a holy paladin told me to get Insightful Earthsiege Diamond (http://www.wowhead.com/?item=41401) instead, as that helped him a lot in Ulduar.
So can u please advise me.

  16. I do think Insightful Earthseige Diamond is the best meta gem you can get by far. The mana return on it is amazing.

  17. Thanks for the guide! My main spec is Protection but I decided to offspec Holy while my friend learns to tank on his DK, and this site has a wealth of straightforward information. I would also like to add that since patch 3.2 there is an option to show item levels in tooltips :)

  18. Hello. Thanks a lot for the guide.
Could you help me please. Ive got my holypaladin with 2/5 turalyons gear (ilvl 232). Should i go for 4/5 or would i be better off with not tier items ilvl245?

  19. I would go for the 245 items Asteros. You’ll have to break the set eventually anyway and really both set bonuses aren’t that great either.
