Adding Interactivity to Holy Paladins

GyphonHeart has a great post up over at the Lion Guard about how Blizzard can make healing on a Holy Paladin more fun.  He makes some great points.  Holy Paladins really don’t have very much interactivity, although it has been getting better over time.

Button spam anyone?

The only talent or ability we have that adds any interactivity as GryphonHeart defines it is Infusion of Light.  It adds an interactive component between Holy Shock and Flash of Light (and Holy Light), and also between Sacred Shield and Flash of Light.  But like he says, even the interactivity here is pretty weak.  We don’t get many instant Flash of Lights, due to the cooldown on Holy Shock.  And the Crit buff to Holy Light isn’t very fun (or even really useful).  We don’t even know if it was the buff that caused our heal to crit, or if it would have just crit anyways.  The old version of Infusion of Light that reduced the cast time of Holy Light was much more interesting (but apparently OP).  The Flash HoT to Sacred Shield really just adds to the stability-giving effect of the spell and gives us one more thing to maintain.

None of our other spells interact at all, which, as he points out, leads us to the two schools of Holy Paladins.  We have those who focus on Holy Light and those who focus on Flash of Light.  There’s really no reason to use the other spell except that we sometimes have to in order to raise our mana efficiency or raise our throughput.  The two spells don’t interact with each other in any way.  In addition, all our other healing buttons are just individual buffs or debuffs that we have to remember to keep up the entire fight.  They also don’t interact with any of our other buttons the way many other classes’ abilities do.

What to do?

GryphonHeart has a number of suggestions on ways Blizzard could add interactivity to the Holy Paladin.  Of course, time will only tell how many of those are OP or are outside of Blizzard’s vision for the class.  The direct (easy?) route has always been the way of the paladin, and that may be a play style that many people enjoy and that Blizzard wants to keep around.  Personally, I really enjoy playing my Holy Paladin and I think our playstyle is what gives us a lot of our advantages.  However, I’m sure there’s  a number of ways Blizzard could add more interactivity to the Holy Paladin without having to water down our current strengths.  I’m looking forward to seeing what they do with the class in Cataclysm and how the new Path of Titans will play into it all.
